Seven athletes that could retire following the 2023 ODI World Cup

July 7, 2023/0 Comments/in Cricket News/by Nanu

The 2023 ODI World Cup will see the conclusion of some of the most illustrious international careers because some of our cherished icons are getting older. These players will compete for the final time at the 2023 Cricket World Cup as they all compete for the top reward in cricket. This article will examine seven players who might hang up their cleats after the 2023 ODI World Cup and consider retiring.

 Mitchell Starc

After the 2023 ODI World Cup in India, Mitchell Starc, the champion of the 2015 World Cup, 2021 T20 World Cup, and 2021–2023 World Test Championship, may decide to retire. The Australian pacer, who is only 33 years old, has kept fit by prioritising international cricket over lucrative T20 leagues. He will most certainly have to give up at least one format, and it is likely that he will retire from One Day Internationals (ODIs) in order to maintain his physical condition and participate in other forms.

Trent Boult

Trent Boult, a 33-year-old Kiwi left-arm pacer, chose last year to bypass New Zealand’s central contract in favour of playing in T20 leagues. Although he has pledged to be available for New Zealand whenever needed, he will make his long-awaited return to the One Day format at the 2023 ODI World Cup. Boult has stated that he wants to focus on playing in different leagues, thus after the 2023 ODI World Cup, he could have to give up at least one format.

 Faf Du Plessis

With his present form, Faf du Plessis will be an invaluable asset for South Africa in the ODI World Cup in 2023. The 38-year-old Faf is currently one of the world’s fittest cricket players, and he has the physical aptitude to play for at least another five years. The World Cup in India aside, it’s about time, and we should mentally be ready for his retirement from international cricket.

 Mushfiqur Rahim

After the 2023 World Cup in India, Mushfiqur Rahim, one of Bangladesh’s most renowned players, plans to end his career in cricket. He has had a significant impact on Bangladesh’s extraordinary rise to prominence as one of the best white-ball teams. Undoubtedly, Bangladeshi cricket fans would find it difficult to say goodbye to their favourite player.

David Warner

The 36-year-old Australian opener recently revealed his retirement plans in a press conference. David Warner made the announcement that he will stop playing in Tests in December and ODIs after the 2023 ODI World Cup. After the 2024 T20 World Cup, which will be contested in the USA and the West Indies, he plans to terminate his career by quitting T20 International cricket.

Angelo Mathews

After the World Cup in India, all-rounder and 2014 T20 World Cup champion Angelo Mathews, 36, is probably going to stop playing ODI cricket. Mathews, who has played 405 times for Sri Lanka internationally, wants to end his career on a successful note.

Shikhar Dhawan

The Indian batsman Shikhar Dhawan may decide to retire after the 2018 World Cup. Given the number of young players competing for the opening spot in India’s white-ball squad, including Yashasvi Jaiswal, Shubman Gill, and Ruturaj Gaikwad, it might be difficult for him to hold onto a spot.

All of these cricket players have proudly and honourably represented their nations. We must honour their great accomplishments despite the ups and downs they encountered throughout their careers as they near retirement. The 2023 ODI World Cup will bring an era to a close, but it will also usher in new talent and the sport’s eternal attraction.
