India has had difficulty winning an ICC trophy since the 2013 Champions Trophy, despite being one of the most formidable teams currently. With two World Cup victories, two Champions Trophies, and a T20 World Cup, India has a respectable record in ICC competition. India, one of the top all-format teams right now, frequently reaches the main stage as the favourite but is unable to win the championship. India’s performance in ICC tournament knockout matches has been dismal since 2013, with no victories in eight ICC competitions. India is having a difficult time winning the World Test Championship final, which is currently underway. Let’s take a closer look at each ICC match that India has lost since 2013.

2014 T20 World Cup

Expectations from the public and the media were extremely high because this was the first ICC tournament following the 2013 Champions Trophy. The 2014 T20 World Cup group stages were dominated by India, who proved why they were considered the favourites. India advanced to the final after soundly defeating South Africa, but in the final, things took a turn for the worse for India as they could only manage 130 runs in the allotted 20 overs. The curse on India was broken in the 18th over when Sri Lanka easily defeated the target. Tournaments started in the ICC.

2015 World Cup

India, the 2015 World Cup’s defending winners at the time, once again dominated the group stages and went undefeated all the way to the quarterfinals. India defeated Bangladesh by 109 runs in the quarterfinal match because they were simply too good for Bangladesh. India faced Australia, the tournament hosts, in the decisive World Cup semifinal. Steve Smith and Aaron Finch helped Australia score 328 in total, and India, in reaction, crumbled under the weight of the pressure and could only manage 233 before being bowled out in the 47th over.

2016 T20 World Cup

The 2016 T20 World Cup was being hosted by India, who were picked to win the competition even before it started. Indian fans were certain that the trophy will return home this time thanks to Virat Kohli, who was at the height of his abilities, home field advantage, and a strong bowling group. In spite of their tremendous skill and tenacity throughout the competition, India was defeated by West Indies in the semi-final at Wankhede Stadium.

2017 Champions Trophy

The 2017 Champions Trophy Final loss to Pakistan was the one that devastated Indian supporters the most. Pakistan distinguished themselves as the superior team in the final as Pakistan defeated India by a huge margin of 180 runs. India was a better team throughout the competition and even defeated Pakistan in the group stages.

2019 World Cup

India thoroughly dominated the 2019 World Cup, taking seven of the nine games during the group round. After winning the group stage, India lost the semi-final by 18 runs, continuing their recent trend. At this point, India’s performance in ICC events started to gain official recognition.

WTC 2019-2021

India advanced to the World Tennis Championship final, but once again New Zealand prevailed. India performed admirably throughout the 2019–2021 WTC Cycle, even defeating Australia in Australia.

 2021 T20 World Cup

As they were eliminated in the group stages, this was likely the first ICC tournament in 8–9 years when India didn’t advance. It also put a stop to their World Cup winning streak against Pakistan.

2022 T20 World Cup

Thanks to Kohli, India’s 2022 T20 World Cup campaign has gotten off to a fast start. India lost just one game in five matches as they advanced to the semifinals. India scored 168 in the semi-final, a total that England easily chased down in 16 overs with ten wickets left.

India has been under pressure for the last ten years since they haven’t been able to put the finishing touches on their outstanding efforts in ICC events.
