Six cricketers died on the pitch, exposing the dark side of the sport.

June 26, 2023/0 Comments/in Cricket News/by Nanu

Cricket, also referred to as the “Gentlemen’s Game,” was invented in England in the first half of the 19th century. Not only is it a hugely popular sport, but it’s also one of the riskiest. It is played using a cork ball, which has the potential to inflict very serious damage. There have been many amusing, happy, and sentimental moments in the history of cricket, but there have also been some sad events. This article will examine the terrible tales of 10 cricket players who perished while participating in the sport.

Phillip Hughes (1988-2014)

Australian top-order batsman Phillip Hughes had played in 51 international contests on behalf of his nation. Tragically, he tragically lost his life playing cricket at the age of 25. On November 25, 2014, it occurred during a Sheffield Shield game between South Australia and New South Wales. Hughes was struck by a ball on his neck while batting, which was fatal. Sean Abbott’s bouncer struck him while he had a score of 63. He was wearing a helmet, but the blow right below his ear knocked him to the ground. He was sent to St. Vincent’s Hospital in Sydney right away, where he underwent surgery and was placed into a coma by medical means. Unfortunately, after two days, Hughes went away three days before his birthday.

Raman Lamba (1960-1998)

Raman Lamba, a gifted cricketer from India who was highly recognised by specialists, regrettably perished in a terrible accident in Dhaka in 1998. In 32 ODIs and four Tests, he had played for India. The same year, while playing in the Dhaka Premier League, Lamba took a hard blow to the head while fielding from the short leg position. He suffered a major brain haemorrhage as a result of this tragic impact, which put him in a coma for the next three days. Lamba was put on a ventilator for three days before being declared dead despite the efforts of a neurosurgeon who had been sent in from Delhi.

Abdul Aziz (1941-1959)

A promising cricket player, Abdul Aziz was a 17-year-old wicketkeeper and opening batter from Karachi, Pakistan. He competed in the Quaid-e-Azam trophy on behalf of Karachi. Tragically, tragedy occurred during the tournament’s final game. Dildar Awan bowled an off-break that was sluggish and caught Abdul Aziz in the heart. He fell to the ground after the accident, and despite receiving prompt medical care, he passed away in the ambulance on the way to the hospital. It’s believed that the blow aggravated an unidentified heart disease that was already present.

Darryn Randall (1980-2013)

Talented South African cricketer Darryn Randall tragically passed away in 2013 at the early age of 32. In Alice, Eastern Cape, a game was taking place when the sad tragedy happened. He was struck on the head while attempting to pull a bouncer, which had immediate and devastating effects. His tragic passing shocked the cricketing world and served as a sombre reminder of the dangers involved in the sport.

 Ian Folley (1963-1993)

Raymond Van Schoor (1990-2015)

Talented cricketer Raymond Van Schoor, who represents Namibia in more than 200 matches, holds the distinction of having received the most caps for his nation. He was well-known for his right-handed batting prowess and had a side job as a wicketkeeper. However, tragedy struck on November 15, 2015, when Raymond had a heart attack while playing versus Free State. He was rushed to the hospital right afterwards, but sadly, his health deteriorated, and on November 25 he passed away. The cricket community was saddened by the passing of this extraordinary player, whose commitment to the game and contributions will never be forgotten.
